Junk removal comes down to waste management and the removal of access to solid waste from areas where people live. The organization of this task has been around ever since humankind first began to organize life around agriculture and excess materials and waste becomes a fact of life. For thousands if not tens of thousands of years people have been finding ways to efficiently take unwanted solid waste from the cities and suburbs and find a place for them. There is a little historical record of these efforts until around the 18th century when waste management became a business in its own right and began to have people writing about the nuances in depth. At this time, London was a bustling city with a population density through the roof and climbing. With no systems of solid (or Liquid) waste disposal, junk was left to pile up in the streets causing the living situation to be a nightmare. Believe it or not, the first efforts to begin some sort of waste management were in an organized effort by enterprising individuals to collect coal ash to be reused to make bricks to then sell to a secondary market.

19th Century Strides

It wasn't until the 19th century that the reform movement began to take shape and enter the world of junk removal. Thee efforts were spearheaded by an English Social Reformer by the name of Edwin Chadwick. The battle for healthier living situations for his fellow Englishmen and in particular the laborers of the city which he grew up, Longsight, Manchester. At this time in history, the prevailing thought was that “bad air” was what brought sickness and diseases to cities, and that rubbish and refuse were the culprit. He proposed that this junk be taken out of the cities in a clean and orderly manner, to mitigate the constant breakouts of disease and sickness in the high population areas.

In the year 1846, the culmination of Chadwick's efforts would finally be put to the law in the Nuisance Removal And Disease Prevention Act. And in 1875 the Public Health Act was passed into law. These laws formed the basis of waste management in London at the time and would help to clean up and regulate the buildup of junk and waste throughout the city. This sparked a new era in waste management, London now required that large “movable receptacles” be placed in high-density areas so that people would have a designated place to put their trash. The modern garbage can. And around this time the first garbage incinerators were being built to quickly burn large amounts of trash in a short amount of time.

Waste Management in The U.S.

These vast changes would help build the foundation of modern waste management and disposal industries all over the world. While it would still take many years before people began to realize the harms of burning solid waste, the invention of garbage trucks in the 20th century saw that the junk removal industry would be able to modernize with the rest of the world. In the U. S., the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act were passed to reduce air pollution and ease the impact of dense carbon smoke in cities across America. The United States took these cues from the UK and expanded. The United States Public Health Service wanted nation solutions that the free market could not answer, such as providing waste management to the poorest of communities. While on the private side, entrepreneurs battled for the right to create a profitable industry centered around the need for waste disposal. As time went on, and the great open spaces that used to be dumping grounds for these private companies began to shrink and disappear, the USPHS urged the laws be passed to create more detailed regulations on just how and where these private entities could dispose of junk. This battle eventually leads to the Solid Waste Disposal Act in 1965. These far-reaching regulations sought to make sure that throughout the country, private waste disposal companies were held accountable for their actions. This law revolutionized the modern world of junk removal and in many ways shaped the industry that we know today. These regulations allow for private entities like The Junk Gentlemen to provide junk pick-up and removal services while still being held to the highest standards of the U.S. government regulations. this Article was made in part by our partners at Mesa Hood Cleaning. call them for all your commercial hood cleaning needs!
